“In Origin in Fraction, Javadi’s most subtle and deeply conflicted work in the exhibition, a woman’s back faces us, surrounded by the sharp edges of mirror tiles. In Farsi, lines from a poem by Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rumi are written on her skin, where the elegant calligraphy intersects with tender lines drawn by muscle and bone. The composition of tesserae opens to reveal the intimacy of word and flesh, cradling the body’s fragility. At the same time, the mirrors loom like an aperture about to close and conceal the female body and the 13th-century text of the Sufi mystic. Threat or promise, support or suppression, resilience or resignation—Origin in Fraction leaves us at a threshold of possibilities.” By Christina Schmid
